Stereotyping Race

Description

For college we had to do a shoot on race stereotyping and the power issues that are involved.
This was my concept.

Here is my reason for shooting the photograph the way I did:
For the shoot for my race stereotypes and the power relationships that are involved I wanted to capture, again the 1960’s feel. This time though, I wanted to portray two upper class women having tea together while a maid is serving them. A very obvious South African racial stereotype is white and black- white people being the upper class and more important, while black people being the lower class who serve the white people. This stereotype was formed because of Apartheid. Even though Apartheid was during the 90’s, I decided to combine the two- the 90’s stereotype with the 60’s look. I decided to have two white women having tea together while the maid, who is black, is pouring the tea. One of the women are instructing the maid, while the other watches. The reason for having chosen the editing style was I wanted that 1960’s pasty look the women had, their skin made white, while their lipstick bright. You can see all talking has stopped between the two women as the maid pours; this is a sign that they think she is not worthy enough to hear what they are speaking about.

Thank you to all that favourite my work.

Your approach is risky. Ever since I saw the picture I created a negative reaction. I was surprised. I wonder what this picture is racist. Then I read what you wrote. But my vision of the impact was negative .......... I do not know what to say ........
